Why choose choir over other activities?
Choral singing offers a complete educational growth experience that challenges, develops, and rewards the body, mind, and spirit. It builds self-esteem, teaches discipline, demands commitment, and fosters community and teamwork.
How is OYC different from a school or church choir?
OYC is not intended to replace school or church choirs. OYC encourages singers to remain involved in those programs while providing an auditioned ensemble able to pursue more challenging and varied repertoire.
Who can audition?
For the 2026–27 season, singers in grades 8 through 12 are placed according to age, ability, experience, and the director’s audition assessment.
When and where are rehearsals?
The 2026–27 calendar lists Monday rehearsals from 4:30–6:30 PM, unless otherwise noted, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 301 N. Main St., Walhalla.
What kind of music does OYC sing?
OYC sings a wide variety of music from around the world, including sacred and secular repertoire, music in many languages, and works from early historical periods through today.
Is OYC affiliated with a church or religion?
No. OYC may rent rehearsal and performance space from churches, but it is not affiliated with a religion and welcomes members regardless of religious affiliation.
What is expected of singers?
Singers are expected to attend rehearsals, concerts, and retreats, communicate absences in advance, arrive prepared and on time, and uphold the organization’s standards of respectful conduct and teamwork.
What is the season?
OYC typically begins in early September and ends in May, with weekly rehearsals and concerts or other performances scheduled during the season.
